Wendelien Daan is an accomplished photographer, visual artist, creative director, DOP and short-film director. She creates a unique and vaguely disturbing atmosphere in all her images, by the use of light and situations which makes you wonder what you are looking at. In her photographs she observes her subject in an abstract and surreal approach. She empowers their beauty in a way that it embraces imperfection, and often zooms in to transform shapes into something unexpected. The images are used to comment on the image of today’s women. Recurring themes in her work are identity, equality, surrealism, and alienation.
She was born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands (1965) and spent her youth in Friesland with her parents, her two sisters and one brother. Living in the countryside gave her a lot of time playing outside and day dream. After finishing High school H.A.V.O exams, she moved to Arnhem to study Fashion Design at ArtEZ /University of the Arts, Netherlands (1983-1988).
During her study she discovered that her love of storytelling is best expressed in photography, and started working on photo projects with fellow students, among which were fashion designers Viktor & Rolf.
In 1989 she moved to Amsterdam and received a fund for Photography that same year, to be able to enlarge her personal portfolio. She was an assistant photographer between 1992-1995, in which she developed her technical photography skills through working with old school technical 4x5” analog cameras as well as, at that time, the introduction of digital camera-backs and Apple computers with image manipulation software.
Between 2000 and 2005 she spent most of her time in NY and Paris and started working for the big names in the industry like Paris Vogue, The Face, Italian Amica, and commercial clients like Neiman Marcus and Nike.
After 911 in NY, where she was present at the time, she moved back to Amsterdam and put her focus more on the European market.
Since 2005, after her daughter was born, she is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
She lives with her family and two cats, loves good coffees and home cooked meals. Together with her husband, they are serious : ) Ducatisti and enjoy (outdoor) sports like running, cycling, skiing, scuba diving and sailing.
Although she still loves to travel and find unusual places to shoot like burned down theaters in Lebanon for ELLE Middle East, Unesco town 'Ait Benhaddou' in Morocco for Harpers Bazaar NL , on the streets of Tokyo for LINDA Magazine and on Diamond Beach - Jökulsárlón Iceland shooting a personal project, she is also very at ease in a studio in her beloved Amsterdam.
